What is the difference between a straight usb cable and a serial to usb cable?
I am trying to get BitPIM to work with my phone and I just bought a cable off the internet and I am worried that it is not the correct cable? I supposedly need a serial to usb or usb to serial cable for it to work correctly? How can I tell the difference?

A serial to serial is a nine pin cable, which ends in a nine pin, the same. It can be straight through, meaning the wire number 1 leaving from one end will be the number one at the other end, or crossed wired, the number one will be number 2, etc…. You buy them like that. If you want to make it complicated, you buy a straight through, and you change it into a crossed wired, by twisting the wires. If you want it simple, you read what it is, and buy it…
Problem : most of the recent computers do not have 9 pins anymore, so serial to serial is impossible. That is when you buy a usb (from your computer normally) to serial, to your satellite box, normally. Your usb to serial can once again be straight, or null modem, other name for the cross ones.
Check before you buy.
One last sad point : your serial to serial is kind of slow connexion, nine pins have bin given up in recent computers because of that. But some machines like slow connexions….. meaning that some ,no, most serial to usb will not work if the download was to be done with a serial to serial.
